Speech Language Pathologist
Valérie Arpin, M.H.Sc. is registered with CASLPO (College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario) and is a member of OSLA (Ontario Association of Speech-Language Pathologists). She is a bilingual clinician with 18 years experience working with young children, particularly preschool aged, with a variety of speech/language disorders and delays.
Valérie holds a Bachelor of Art’s degree in Linguistics with a minor in Psychology and completed her Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Ottawa in 2000. Valérie worked one year with school-aged children in an Ottawa area school board, before making the transition to work with the toddler and preschool population within the Ontario’s Preschool Speech and Language Program for 14 years.
Her passion for working with children with autism grew, as she encountered an increasing number of children with autism in her years of practicing as a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). In 2009, Valérie’s professional journey took on a different turn when both of her twin boys were diagnosed with autism. It is at this point in her career that Valérie’s connection with autism became a personal one.
In 2015, she joined Vero’s team, where she continues to pursue her passion for helping young children with autism reach their full potential. Because of her own diagnosis of ADHD, she understands the challenges that come with living with a neurodevelopmental disorder. Valérie strongly believes in connecting with her clients and their families and in including each child’s interests and strengths into her therapy plan. Her personal experience has not only provided her with better insight but has also inevitably influenced her into becoming a more sensitive clinician.
During her professional career, Valérie has gained a great deal of knowledge and experience in early intervention. She has obtained her Hanen Certification in It Takes Two to Talk®, Target Word® and More Than Words®. She is trained in PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Musculature Phonetic Targets) and in the Lidcombe Program, a behavioural treatment for children who stutter. Since joining Vero’s team, she has obtained her advanced ESDM (Early Start Denver Model) training.
Valérie is a proud hockey/soccer mom to two sweet, handsome and energetic 11 year old twin boys. There’s not much down time in this household and she wouldn’t have it any other way! Playing street hockey or board games, having Nerf wars, fishing by the dock or cuddling up for movie night are some examples of how Valérie spends quality time with her boys. Also a huge part of her life is Finnegan, her soon to be 13 year old Golden Retriever who has been by her side through life’s high’s and low’s. This dog gives “the” best hugs in the world and is an absolute joy to have around. Valérie loves to cook for her family and friends and considers music an essential part of life. Life without music just wouldn’t make sense!
